NHL '95 was EA Sports' third licensed ice hockey game, promising the fastest action in the series to date. The action is viewed top-down, and can be played with or without realistic penalties. There is a full season mode, allowing you to guide a team through all 84 matches, with the option of injuries potentially putting players out of a sequence of matches. You have full control over trading and creating players for your squad. New in-game moves include dummy shots and lie-down blocks.

A smooth, deep early-EA hockey game with team-management features, and one of the cheaper US carts.

NHL 95 is an EA Sports hockey game whose Genesis version was developed by High Score Productions and Double Diamond Sports. It came out in North America in September 1994 and in Europe on 23 September 1994, with rosters and player attributes reflecting the 1994-95 NHL season.

GamePro's review of the Genesis version praised the ability to sign, trade and release real NHL players, to create your own fantasy players, the advanced statistics, the new injury animations, the realistic sounds and the speed of the game. It said the Super NES version was just average, with weaker controls and sound and missing content such as shootout and playoff modes.

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Next Generation rated the Genesis version four stars out of five, saying EA scores again with the best NHL action anywhere.

Also on other platforms

MS-DOS · Super NES · Game Gear · Game Boy

  • Super NES. GamePro called the Super NES version just average, citing vastly inferior controls and sound effects compared with the Genesis and the removal of shootout mode, playoff mode, fake shots and drop-passes.
  • Game Boy. GamePro found the Game Boy version's impressive graphics and selection of modes outweighed by the frustration of limited two-button control, and said the large sprites leave so little ice that you almost need a map to find the net.
  • MS-DOS. Next Generation rated the PC version four stars out of five.

Before you buy

Among US carts it sits near the bottom of the price range. The European cart usually costs more than the US one. The cartridge saves to a battery inside it, so test that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair and not a sign of a fake. Sega Retro lists it as working with EA's 4 Way Play and with XBAND. EA's 4 Way Play and Sega's first Team Player do not run each other's games; Sega's later Team Player (MK-1647) runs both in its EXTRA mode.
