About NHLPA Hockey 93

The second part in Electronic Arts' hockey series. It features the NHLPA license (so it has real player names), but not the NHL license (so it doesn't have NHL team names). Gameplay is altered only slightly over the predecessor. Regular season and Playoff modes are available. Goalies have improved AI, there are more foul play options and the game now features detailed statistics.

An early EA hockey game with a built-in save, and one of the cheapest US carts today.

NHLPA Hockey '93 is Electronic Arts' second NHL-series hockey game, after NHL Hockey from 1991. It had a license from the players' association but not the league, so teams appear by city only, with no team nicknames and no NHL logos. The Genesis version saves lines and a playoff in progress. It came out in North America in September 1992 and in Europe on 21 October 1992.

Mean Machines Sega noted that the Park Place graphics team had added scenes of graphic horror: a swift stick to the head leaves the victim sprawled on the ice, bleeding. By February 1993 it was the top-selling Genesis game of the month at the retailer Babbage's.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 36September 199494%

“A brilliant hockey simulation thot contains everything an avid fan of the sport could wish for ond then some.”

— Mean Machines Sega, October 1992

“Basically this is EA hockey with a few knobs on. To be honest, the original game is simpler and better! It's cheaper too!”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“The sequel to EA Hockey, this appears as the benchmark in ice entertainment.”

— Mega Action, August 1993

“and that essential ingredient in any hockey game - a punch-up sub-game for when the players start to get under each others' feet. Superb, fast, end-to-end hockey action with a wonderful two-player option.”

— MegaTech, September 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis version saves lines and the ongoing playoff to EEPROM, while the Super NES version saves progress with passwords.

Before you buy

Among US carts it is one of the cheapest. The European cart usually costs noticeably less than the US one. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
