A fully licensed, hard-hitting hockey cart that sells for very little.
NHL 99 on the Nintendo 64 carries the NHL and NHLPA licenses with every team and player, including the Nashville Predators expansion team. MBL Research developed this version and EA Sports published it, with North America getting it in October 1998 and Europe in November.
Hyper judged it a worthwhile purchase for recreational fans, even though the controls were not executed as well as they could have been. GameFan's April 1999 review of Konami's Blades of Steel treated NHL 99 as the better of the two.
How it was made
The Nintendo 64 version was developed by MBL Research and published by EA Sports.

Also on other platforms
PlayStation · Windows
- PlayStation. The PlayStation version had higher-resolution graphics than NHL 98, but its frame rate and unresponsive controls, especially in multiplayer modes, hurt playability.
- Windows. Next Generation called the Windows version the best-looking hockey game on the PC.

Before you buy
The US cartridge is among the cheapest in the library and the fake risk is low. The game saves to a Controller Pak, not to the cartridge, so budget for one. PAL copies cost somewhat more, loose and complete. Complete copies sell for a few times the loose price, and sealed copies for noticeably more again.
