About Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark is a first-person shooter video game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 video game console. It is considered the spiritual successor to Rare's earlier first-person shooter GoldenEye 007, with which it shares many gameplay features. Perfect Dark was first released in North America on 22 May 2000; PAL and NTSC-J releases followed soon afterwards. A separate Game Boy Color game, also titled Perfect Dark, was released in August 2000 as a supplement to the game and allows certain features within the Nintendo 64 game to alternatively be unlocked via a Transfer Pak. The game features a single-player mode consisting of 17 main missions in which the player assumes the role of Carrington Institute agent Joanna Dark as she attempts to stop a conspiracy by rival corporation dataDyne. It also features a range of multiplayer options, including a co-operative mode and traditional deathmatch settings. Technically, it is one of the most advanced games developed for the Nintendo 64, with an optional high resolution graphics mode and Dolby Surround Sound. A Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak is required to access the game's campaign and most of the multiplayer features.

Rare's sprawling shooter and a high point for the cartridge, though without the Expansion Pak most of it will not run.

Perfect Dark is a first-person shooter developed and published by Rare. You play Joanna Dark, an agent of the Carrington Institute, and try to stop a conspiracy by the rival corporation dataDyne. It has a campaign, a co-operative mode, and multiplayer with computer-controlled bots. Duncan Botwood and David Doak are credited as designers, and Grant Kirkhope, Graeme Norgate and David Clynick as composers.

N64 Magazine called it dauntingly huge, a game that does what its predecessor did bigger, better and more often. It reached North America in May 2000, the PAL regions in June 2000 and Japan in October 2000.

“Perfect Dark is stunning. It takes everything that made its predecessor such an enduring favourite and does it bigger, better and more often.”

— N64 Magazine, June 2000

“but PD really is an utterly gorgeous game, and perhaps the most visually impressive N64 cart I've ever seen. The texture quality is tops, but the insanity really stems from the freakish level design.”

— GameFan, June 2000

“Perfect Dark is not perfect. Choppy frame-rates plague the more ambitious multiplayer-modes. But you know what? You'll still want to spend months locked in a room with this masterpiece.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, June 2000

“the final product is a work of art that gamers will cherish forever. It may not deliver the star power that the James Bond license did so well, but rest assured, Perfect Dark packs more than enough heat to whet the appetites of crazed first-person fanatics.”

— Game Informer, June 2000

Worth knowing

  • Velvet Dark. Rare planned a sister title, Velvet Dark, for the Nintendo 64 or GameCube, but it never moved beyond pre-production.

Before you buy

Budget for the Expansion Pak: without it you get only one- and two-player Combat Simulator and the 30 Challenges, and the single-player missions, three- and four-player games and co-op need it. The Rumble Pak is optional. The US cartridge sits above the middle of the library; PAL copies cost less, and Japanese copies cost about the same loose and more complete. Not for Resale demo carts are listed at a much higher price and no reliable way to spot a fake one is published, so buy those graded or with a board photo. For ordinary carts, ask for a photo of the board.
