About PGA Golf
PGA Golf is played from an overhead point of view. Up to four players can compete on a nine hole, par 38 course. Shoot over trees, sand traps and water hazards. Play from a bag of nine clubs; hook, slice, and control the power of each swing. You will receive penalty strokes for balls that land out of bounds and in the water, and of course the lowest score at the end of the round wins!

A club-selection golf game from Mattel's Sports network that Mattel itself used to argue the Intellivision played deeper than the Atari.
PGA Golf was one of Mattel's early sports cartridges, released in November 1980 and developed by APh. Mattel's own advertising in Electronic Games in 1981 and 1982 made it the exhibit in a head-to-head with the Atari 2600: nine clubs to choose from here, against one on Atari's golf game. That was a Mattel sales pitch, not a review, but it tells you what the game was selling, which was detail over speed.
There is little else in period press that singles it out. It is a solid, unflashy sports cart that sits well in a complete Mattel sports set.
How it was made
Mattel Electronics published it in November 1980, with APh Technological Consulting as developer.
What the press said at the time
“may take a little longer than the average video game to master pre cisely because it includes so many nove features.”
“makes excellent use of the Intellivision controller by allowing the gamer to hit long, medium or short shots depending on which action button is used to initiate the swing.”
Worth knowing
- From the Intellivision manual. The course has nine holes, and the booklet says a weekend duffer can play them like a pro with practice.
- From the Intellivision manual. This is the UK edition of the manual, distributed by Advanced Consumer Electronics of Wembley, England, with replacement overlays offered at 75p per set of two.
Before you buy
Mattel included two keypad overlays, so check for both in a complete copy. Sears sold it as plain Golf, and collectors note that the Sears box has its title printed upside down compared with other Sears boxes, which is normal for that box. A collector-documented ROM variant adds distance-to-hole and par information, though no price difference is recorded for it. The box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value; loose carts are inexpensive.
