About Q*bert's Qubes

The game features Q*bert, but introduces new enemies: Meltniks, Soobops, and Rat-A-Tat-Tat. The player navigates the protagonist around a plane of cubes while avoiding enemies. Jumping on a cube causes it to rotate, changing the color of the visible sides of the cube. The goal is to match a line of cubes to a target sample; later levels require multiple rows to match.

Parker Brothers' late, little-noticed Q*bert sequel, where the box is worth far more than the cartridge.

Q*bert's Qubes was the first sequel to Gottlieb's 1982 arcade hit. Q*bert hops across a plane of cubes, and each jump rotates a cube and changes the colors of its visible sides; the goal is to match a line of cubes to a target sample while avoiding new enemies called Meltniks, Shoobops and Rat-A-Tat-Tat. Parker Brothers published the 2600 version in December 1984, with JWDA as developer.

Despite the famous character, the game's release was hardly noticed. It arrived late in the 2600's commercial life, and boxed copies are where the money is.

How it was made

Developed by JWDA and published by Parker Brothers. Parker Brothers showed home versions of Q*bert's Qubes at the Winter Consumer Electronics Show in January 1985.

Before you buy

Medium risk. No fakes are documented. The box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value, so for a complete copy check that both are present and original and that the box condition matches the photos. Make sure the listing is Q*bert's Qubes and not Parker Brothers' original 2600 Q*bert. Compare the label against AtariAge's scans and ask for a board photo through the dust door.
