A scaled-down take on the 3DO Road Rash, kept going by its video and licensed soundtrack.

This is the Sega CD game Road Rash, published by Electronic Arts, with Monkey Do Productions and New Level Software listed as developers. It came out only in North America, in March 1995. GameFan, in May 1995, said it carries the 3DO game's video, its tunes from bands including Soundgarden and Therapy?, all 15 bikes and all the courses, but the levels use bit-mapped graphics because the Sega CD cannot draw textured polygons.

Next Generation judged it a scaled-down version of the 3DO game, with the digitized cut scenes and the Soundgarden soundtrack intact but races that lack the texture-mapped countryside, on courses it found sparse.

What the press said at the time

Game Players Vol. 8 (October 1995)October 199562%

“Sure, Road Rash! CD is a good 16-bit racer, but let's not go overboard.”

— GameFan, May 1995

“It's not awful, but it's not as good as we'd expect from the series.”

— Next Generation, June 1995

“Among the most impressive pieces of software on the Sega CD, this is a must-have selection.”

— Electronic Games, June 1995

“This bike-ridin', skull-crushing game has always been great fun in the past, so what the hell happened to this version?”

— Game Players, October 1995

Before you buy

The US disc sits above the middle among North American Sega CD games. As a March 1995 release it should come in the tall plastic case, which is fragile and often swapped for one from a cheaper game, so check that the case and manual match the game.
