A competent late-1999 arcade racer with licensed convertibles, cheap enough to pick up without regret.

Roadsters is a car racing game developed and published by Titus Interactive, released on the Nintendo 64 in North America in December 1999 with a PAL release days later. It mixes licensed cars from manufacturers such as Mitsubishi, Alfa Romeo and Lotus with unlicensed cars from imaginary makers that are based on real models.

Next Generation's reviewer said in April 2000 that the N64 version was not as adrenaline-pumping as San Francisco Rush, but was a solid game with a decent engine that would tide racing fans over until Ridge Racer 64.

Next Generation3/5

“Which leaves Roadsters as a top notch racing game. Even if it's not perfect, it's still brilliantly fast, commendably smooth and heavy with options”

— N64 Magazine, Christmas 1999

“On the surface, it’s a very capable racer; the main problem is, there’s nothing extraordinary about this game.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, February 2000

“The game's only major drawbacks are that reverse gear is difficult to use and after a few upgrades races are too easy to win. Roadsters Trophy is a perfectly adequate game”

— Game Informer, January 2000

  • Dreamcast. NextGen's Greg Orlando found the Dreamcast version a dull ride, saying it provides a rather straight and uninterrupted ride to ennui.

Before you buy

The North American cartridge sits below the median price for the library and the fake risk is low. Nintendo listed the game among those enhanced by the Expansion Pak, which is optional. The PAL release is a separate cartridge that costs somewhat less, loose and complete. A complete copy of the North American release is worth about three times the loose price, and a sealed one considerably more.
