A faithful two-stick arcade shooter that asks for two controllers and rewards you for having them.
Robotron 64 is the Nintendo 64 port of Robotron X, itself an update of the 1982 arcade shooter Robotron: 2084. Player 1 developed it, and Crave Entertainment published it in North America in January 1998, with GT Interactive publishing in PAL regions in June 1998. It was first scheduled for release by Midway in summer 1997 but was shelved before a new publisher picked it up.
Next Generation (March 1998) praised how it controlled compared with the so-so PlayStation conversion: it takes two controllers, one held in each hand, with the left thumb steering and the right thumb firing. Electronic Gaming Monthly's review that winter called it one of the most addictive games in quite some time and said Crave was wise to rescue it.
What the press said at the time
| Next Generation Issue 39 | March 1998 | 3 out of 5 stars |
“The results are often a mixed bag, and Robotron 64 is no exception.”
“this tiny 4MB cart stands as proof that size isn't everything — it's what you do with it that counts. It still may not improve on the original, but it's much better than expected.”
“Well, my opinion is 'no.' Robotron 64 is just that - Robotron but on the N64. This would have been nice as a bonus game maybe, as part of a package”
Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style."
Before you buy
Fake risk is low. Loose copies sit about at the library's median price, and a complete copy costs about four times the loose price. PAL copies cost more than the US cart, loose and complete.
