Rygar is a 1986 platform game developed and published by Tecmo for arcades. The player assumes the role of a "Legendary Warrior" who must navigate numerous levels and defeat enemies with a weapon called the "Diskarmor", a razor-sharp shield with a long chain attached to it that operates like a yo-yo. The warrior intends to defeat Ligar, an evil "dominator". Later ports, particularly the NES and Lynx versions, expanded on the near non-existent story from the original.

Atari Lynx prices, all games & how to spot a fake

A loose adaptation of the arcade action-platformer, and better than the Lynx's reputation for licensed ports suggests.

NuFX developed it and Atari published it in 1990. It takes the arcade Rygar's premise and rebuilds it for a handheld rather than attempting a straight port, which was the right call — the arcade game leans on screen real estate the Lynx does not have.

One of the 17 titles that reached Japan via Mumin Corporation. Never re-released.

Sound effects by Lou Hoehn, music by Doug Hubbard, credited by Atari Explorer in March/April 1991. The review notes the coin-op was "originally designed to run on a powerful, semi-dedicated arcade system", which is why Atari used the Lynx conversion as a showcase for the hardware.

Arcade. Tecmo's 1986 coin-op, which Atari Explorer described as "originally designed to run on a powerful, semi-dedicated arcade system" — the reason Atari used the Lynx conversion as a hardware showcase. Not to be confused with the NES Rygar, which is a substantially different game with an overworld map.
NES. Tecmo's NES version restructured the arcade game into an action-adventure with an interconnected overworld. The Lynx cartridge converts the ARCADE original — the straight side-scroller — so the two are not the same game.

Atari Explorer's 1991 review sets out the premise: as hereditary champion of the Good, Rygar must win back the 23 territories the Dark Force stole 10,000 years ago. His weapon is "a kind of energy boomerang, a globe of force that shoots out over a short distance, devastates almost anything in its path, then returns to his hand" — and he can vault over enemies' heads, stunning them as he passes.
