Modding scene

Difficulty
hard-mod
Custom firmware
No public CFW for current firmware as of 2026; older firmware exploits exist (5.05 Jailbreak, 7.55 Jailbreak, 9.00 GoldHEN)
PS4 modding is firmware-locked — once a console updates past the latest exploit (currently 11.00/12.50 area, limited data), it's locked out; jailbroken PS4s are valuable collector items; 9.00 GoldHEN is the modern mainstream softmod target

Reception & legacy

Launch reception

Strong launch — outsold Xbox One roughly 2-to-1 globally driven by Sony's clear messaging on used games, DRM, and the $399 price ($100 cheaper than Xbox One)

Notable controversies

E3 2013 'How to Share Games on PS4' video (60 seconds, just passing a disc between two players) became a defining marketing moment vs Xbox One's confused DRM messaging; later PSN outages; cross-platform play delays vs other platforms

Cultural significance

Best-selling PlayStation since PS2 (~117M+ units); cemented Sony's narrative dominance in the 2010s; first-party studios produced what many consider PlayStation's peak narrative era
