A shogi game that launched with the Japanese N64 and sold poorly, for players who read Japanese and want the history.

Saikyo Habu Shogi is a shogi game from SETA, released in Japan only on June 23, 1996, as one of the Nintendo 64's three Japanese launch games alongside Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64. Its special guest was the shogi player Yoshiharu Habu, who won all seven major shogi championships in the year of its release.

Expectations were that it would be a bestseller and a showcase of the console's power, but sales were low, with roughly one copy sold for every hundred consoles at launch. SETA followed with Morita Shogi 64 as an indirect sequel and later with a direct sequel, Kosoku Tanigawa Shogi.

Before you buy

This is the Japanese cartridge, and the game came out only in Japan. Loose it sits below the median for Japan-only games, and the fake risk is low. A complete copy costs noticeably more than a loose cart. Shogi and its menus are Japanese-language, so it suits players who can read them.
