About South Park

Single player takes the form of a "Story" mode divided into five episodes and fifteen linear levels. The player will face weak minions (which change based on the episode), plus occasional sub-bosses which will try to escape into town. The final level is devoted to a unique boss fight. Players use quirky weapons ranging from infinite yellow snowballs to cow launchers and toxic Terrance and Phillip dolls. Every weapon has a secondary fire, and players switch between the four main characters when they switch weapons - each of the four kids shares a single life bar because of this. The kids will comment on game actions as they occur, with heavier profanity censored with bleeps. The kids will get angrier (and fouler) as their health depletes, until they finally give up on saving the town and go home.

A rude, licensed first-person shooter that fans of the show will enjoy more than shooter fans will.

South Park is a first-person shooter based on the Comedy Central series, developed by Iguana Entertainment on a modified version of the Turok 2 engine and published by Acclaim. The N64 cart came out in North America in December 1998 and the PAL regions in May 1999. The N64 version has 20 characters and 17 multiplayer levels, and had shipped nearly a million copies worldwide by June 1999.

GameFan reported in January 1999 that it would not be sold at Wal-Mart because of its offensive language, and Next Generation (March 1999) called the N64 version surprisingly raunchy for a Nintendo console. IGN said it was just as funny as the TV series, while GameSpot found the level design weak on its own but fitting for the license.

What the press said at the time

“We tried hard to like it, we really did, but four-player South Park just doesn’t cut it.”

— N64 Magazine, January 1999

“The open environments are uninspired, and the gameplay can become tedious after a while. But thankfully, the game s humor and voices are enough to keep fans laughing, despite its faults.”

— GameFan, January 1999

“you go rent this game, invite your friends, and play it all night.”

— Game Informer, January 1999

“A fairly monotonous first-person shooter, but the greatness of South Park has rubbed off on it well.”

— N64 Magazine, February 1999

How the Nintendo 64 version differs

GameRankings scored the Nintendo 64 version highest: 67.11%, against 51.72% for the PC version and 41.22% for the PlayStation version.

N64 Magazine's February 1999 issue was unimpressed, citing linear missions, horrific fogging and an average multiplayer.

Before you buy

Low fake risk. The US cart sits about at the library median on price, and PAL copies cost about half as much, loose and complete. Nintendo listed the game among those enhanced by the Expansion Pak; both the Expansion Pak and the Rumble Pak are optional. A complete copy costs about three times the loose price, and sealed copies cost more again.
