Space Ace on Wikipedia

Space Ace is a LaserDisc video game produced by Bluth Group, Cinematronics and Advanced Microcomputer Systems. It was unveiled in October 1983, just four months after the Dragon's Lair game, followed by a limited release in December 1983 and a wide release on April 29, 1984. Like its predecessor, it uses film-quality animation played back from a LaserDisc.

Bluth's follow-up: everything said about Dragon's Lair applies, including the audience split.

Dexter, the Infanticide ray, and Borf, in the same timed-input format. The two Bluth discs are collected as a pair and should be listed with that in mind.

How it was made

The Jaguar conversion's studio is not separately credited in the sources checked. Advanced Microcomputer Systems is credited for the original version, but on this era's ports the Jaguar conversion was frequently done by a different team — see the per-platform credits below before attributing it. Credited: designed by Don Bluth.

How the Atari Jaguar version differs

Announced for the Jaguar CD by ReadySoft alongside Dragon's Lair II, as part of the add-on's launch line-up (GameFan, June 1994).

Every home version of Space Ace is an attempt to reproduce the arcade machine's LaserDisc animation, with widely varying success — the CD-ROM releases preserve far more of the original footage than the floppy-disk ones.

Also on other platforms

Amiga · Apple IIGS · 3DO · CD-i · Jaguar CD · Macintosh · MS-DOS · Atari ST · Sega CD · DVD Player · Blu-ray · Wii · DSiWare · iOS · PlayStation 3 · Android · Nintendo Switch

  • MS-DOS. ReadySoft shipped floppy-disk versions across the computer formats, then issued a CD-ROM edition with downsampled video that preserved almost all of the original laserdisc footage — the floppy releases could not.
  • Super NES. Cartridge storage made full-motion video impossible, so the SNES release is a completely different thing: a top-down action game with levels based on the scenes from the laserdisc original.
  • Atari ST. One of the floppy platforms, and one that also received the sequel Space Ace II: Borf's Revenge, which mixed new animation with scenes cut from the first game for file-size reasons.
  • PlayStation. Sold as part of the Dragon's Lair Trilogy compilation alongside both Dragon's Lair games.

Worth knowing

  • The Super NES version isn't the same game at all. Every disc-based version is the laserdisc animation with the branching-choice play intact. A cartridge could not hold that, so the Super NES release was rebuilt from scratch as a top-down action game whose levels merely reference scenes from the original. Anyone comparing versions of Space Ace is comparing two different genres wearing the same name — which is exactly why the Jaguar CD release, holding the real footage, is the one worth having.

Before you buy

Watch the odd market shape on this one: complete copies carry a large premium over loose discs. Test-played or discounted, as with every Jaguar CD.

Authenticity & condition — Atari Jaguar

Specific to the format this title shipped in

Buying a Jaguar CD title

Jaguar CDs are the most fragile discs of their generation, and the reason is structural rather than bad luck: Atari built a proprietary format on the audio-CD spec instead of standard CD-ROM. Capacity rose to roughly 790MB, but error correction fell.

  • Light scratches that a PlayStation disc shrugs off can make a Jaguar CD unreadable. Treat "light scratches, plays fine" with more scepticism here than on any other platform.
  • Only buy discs that have been test-played on real hardware — emulator testing proves nothing about a marginal disc.
  • Confirm the Memory Track cartridge is included or already owned: most Jaguar CD titles cannot save without it, and it is routinely missing from used listings.
  • Check the jewel case hinges and tray teeth. Replacement cases are common and are not a fault, but a swapped case often travels with swapped inserts.

What a complete copy includes

  • Disc, jewel case and back insert
  • Manual
  • Any pack-in disc the title shipped with — the Tempest 2000 soundtrack CD and the Myst demo disc are the two most often missing from "complete" listings
