About StarCraft

StarCraft is a real-time strategy game set in a distant sector of the Milky Way galaxy in the 26th century. Players command one of three species across separate campaigns: the Terrans, resourceful human colonists cut off from Earth; the Zerg, an insectoid swarm that assimilates other species; and the Protoss, a technologically advanced race with powerful psionic abilities. Each species features distinct units, structures, and strategic options. The game includes a story-driven single-player campaign for each faction and competitive multiplayer via Battle.net.

A bold conversion of a PC strategy hit to a console, interesting as an oddity and now one of the more expensive N64 carts.

StarCraft 64 is the Nintendo 64 conversion of Blizzard's PC strategy game. Nintendo published it, North America got it on June 13, 2000, and Europe followed on May 25, 2001. Mass Media, a subsidiary of THQ, converted it from the PC game. It was in development from 1999, and Blizzard had first considered a PlayStation port before choosing the N64. GameFan's April 1999 preview listed it as coming to the N64 courtesy of Nintendo themselves.

The N64 version includes the missions from both StarCraft and the Brood War expansion, plus exclusive extras: two tutorials and a secret mission called Resurrection IV. Reviewers were less kind than they were to the PC game, and criticized the graphics against the PC version.

How it was made

Converted from the PC game by Mass Media Interactive Entertainment, a THQ subsidiary, and published by Nintendo.

What the press said at the time

“So, this isn't bad. We just wonder if the whole RTS genre is best left on the PC, where having a monitor, mouse and keyboard makes it far less likely you'll be crying yourself to sleep at the end of it all.”

— N64 Magazine, September 2000

“It’s annoying, but it isn't the end of the world. Surprisingly enough, this is one ofthe year's best N64 games by far.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, September 2000

Before you buy

The US cartridge is among the pricier carts in the library, so the fake risk is medium: ask for a photo of the board, which is the reliable test, because a cart that boots proves nothing. The Expansion Pak is needed for part of the game: the Terran campaign runs without it, but the Brood War campaign and two-player mode need it. The Rumble Pak is optional. PAL copies cost several times as much as US ones, loose and complete, so the US release is the sensible buy. A complete copy costs a few times the loose price.
