A Japan-only mecha fighter that several reviewers criticized, bought as a curiosity for Super Robot Wars fans.

Super Robot Spirits is a 3D fighting game by Banpresto, released in Japan on July 17, 1998. It is a spinoff of the Super Robot Wars line and features combat between mecha from different anime series.

Several reviews were harsh. N64 Magazine's Martin Kitts was particularly critical of the poorly drawn backdrops, which contrasted badly with the character models, and one German reviewer found the gameplay so bad that it felt like an unfinished prototype. Ultra 64's reviewer, though, thought the game had a nice atmosphere.

“A crushing disappointment for fans of the cartoons, and another average beat- "em-up for the N64.”

— N64 Magazine, October 1998

Before you buy

Only the Japanese cartridge exists, so there is no other version to choose between. It sits somewhat above the median for Japan-only games, and fake risk is low. A complete copy costs about three times the loose price.
