About Syndicate

The Jaguar port is graphically mostly the same as the 3DO port. The main differences are different music due to different sound generation, the button highlights are different, and the mini-map is in the same style as the original DOS version but it retains the colors of the 3DO, as well as the mouse is tracked on the mini-map unlike any other version. All the video sequences including the intro is replaced with a static image of the video.

There are two main titles: Syndicate (1993) and Syndicate Wars (1996), both of which are isometric real-time tactics games. A real strategy game on a console whose catalogue is mostly action — and the game underneath is excellent.

Bullfrog's cyberpunk corporate-warfare classic: deploy four augmented agents into isometric city maps and persuade, kill, or brainwash your way to territorial control — the Persuadertron, which converts civilians into a following mob, is one of the great video game items. The conversion is competent; the compromise is controls, because Syndicate was built for a mouse and directing four agents with a Jaguar pad is slower than it should be.

The Jaguar conversion's studio is not separately credited in the sources checked. Bullfrog Productions is credited for the original version, but on this era's ports the Jaguar conversion was frequently done by a different team — see the per-platform credits below before attributing it. How the Atari Jaguar version differs

Electronic Gaming Monthly's four reviewers called it the best home console version of Syndicate to that point, but still clearly inferior to the PC original. Next Generation went further — 'as close to the original title as is possible without the use of a mouse.'

GamePro praised the use of the Jaguar controller's many buttons but reported a hard-to-read display and sharp, erratic slowdown.

Next Generation later rated the 3DO version noticeably above the Jaguar's, and both far above the Genesis and Sega CD conversions.

Amiga. One of the two lead versions, released in the United Kingdom on 2 July 1993 alongside MS-DOS before anything else.
MS-DOS. Renders the planning screens and main menus in 256 colours but drops to just 16 for the tactical simulation itself. Re-released in January 2012 packaged with a pre-configured DOSBox for modern Windows.
Super NES. This is the version that survived commercially: it was the one included on EA Replay for the PlayStation Portable in November 2006, running under emulation.
PlayStation. Never got the original, but did get the 1996 direct sequel Syndicate Wars, which moved the series to 3D. Starbreeze Studios later re-imagined the whole thing as a first-person shooter in 2012.

Buying a Jaguar cartridge

Cartridges are the durable half of this library — the risk is provenance, not decay. The platform has an active post-commercial scene, so the question is usually which era a cartridge is from rather than whether it still works.

Ask for a photo of the label edge and the cartridge back. Reproductions are usually printed on adhesive photo stock and sit proud of the label recess.
Donor shells are the common trick: sanding marks on the back, or adhesive ghosting where an older label was lifted, are the strongest signals.
Cartridges are region-free on this platform, so a cheaper PAL copy plays on a North American console — a price difference is not evidence of a fake.
