A Genesis tie-in to the 1994 Flintstones film that was distributed through Sega Channel, so treat any cartridge with care.
The Flintstones is a platform game based on the live-action 1994 film, published by Ocean Software. The Genesis version was developed at least partly by Foley Hi-Tech, and the game also appeared on the Super NES and Game Boy.
The Genesis version was distributed through the Sega Channel download service. The full game was long considered lost, and in 2019 a prototype surfaced online with no sound and only two levels.
What the press said at the time
| Sega Pro Issue 36 | September 1994 | 79% |
“To my surprise, the Flintstones turned out to be a pretty fun game. Fred and the cast of Bedrock are drawn very well and the game is diverse and challenging.”
“Fred Flintstone is an average cave guy who's got himself an average video game. Despite its prehistoric qualities, though, The Flintstones is fun to play.”
“A little insubstantial but otherwise as good a Flintstones game as one could hope for.”
“Fred Flintstone has been kicking around for a a fair old time and now he stars in his own MD game! Fun graphics and gameplay in this platform adventure.”
How the Sega Genesis version differs
The Genesis version never got a physical release. It was distributed digitally and exclusively through the Sega Channel in North America in 1996.
The full Genesis game was considered lost for years. A 2019 prototype had no sound and only two levels, and the complete version was later recovered by the Video Game History Foundation.

- Super NES. Next Generation rated the SNES version three stars out of five, saying it looks good and plays well but could have used more innovation.
- Game Boy. Ocean published the Game Boy version in 1994, a year before the Super NES release.
Before you buy
Check this one carefully. Because the Genesis game was distributed through Sega Channel, ask any seller exactly what the cartridge is and for a photo of the board before paying. A western Genesis cart has no notch in its shell, so a shell with a notch is a repro sign. A Super NES or Game Boy copy listed under the same name is a different game.
