About The Lawnmower Man

The Lawnmower Man is the game based on the 1992 movie of the same name (itself loosely based on a Stephen King short story) starring pre-Bond fame Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Lawrence Angelo, a scientist working for Virtual Space Industries in "Project 5", a secret research that attempts to increase the intelligence of primates using psychotropic drugs and VR training. The twists of the game are true-3D level connectors, based on the CG sequences of the movie, usually all involving avoiding obstacles (and the occasional shooting) at high speed in the VR world. There are four different (Virtual World, Cyber War, Cyber Run and Cyber Tube), each taking a slightly different approach (Virtual World is seen in first person, the objective being dodging obstacles such as trees and archs and reach the exit, Cyber War similar to Virtual World but with some shooting stops, Cyber Run is seen in third person and requires occasional shooting of obstacles, while Cyber Tube is a fast travel with plenty of enemies in a VR tunnel).

The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Genesis version ($19).

Also released on: Super Nintendo Entertainment System · Sega Mega Drive/Genesis · Super Famicom · DOS · Mac · Game Boy. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Genesis version

A patchy movie tie-in that mixes shooting, flying and puzzles, and costs a bit more than the median.

The Lawnmower Man is the Genesis game based on the 1992 film, developed by Atod and published by Time Warner Interactive. It came out in North America in 1994 and in PAL territories in November 1994. Electronic Games described the Genesis game as an action contest with trippy graphics, presented as a series of action modules.

GamePro criticized controls and graphics that vary in quality through the game, but praised an above-average run-and-shoot adventure, hypnotic first-person flying and brain-teasing puzzles. Game Players found the cyberspace flying sections OK but not great.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 43April 199574%

“А multitude of gaming ideas are rolled into one for this belated licence of the virtual reality movie, with 3-D flying, platform shoot-em-up and puzzle stages. Not bad.”

— Sega Pro, April 1995

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis game is a cartridge version with platform and shooter levels, not the interactive movie of the CD versions.

GamePro said the quality of the controls and graphics varies through the Genesis game, but praised its mix of run-and-shoot action, first-person flying and puzzles.

Among US carts it sits above the middle. The European cart usually costs a little less than the US cart when loose, but a complete European copy usually costs more.

The Sega CD version

An interactive-movie take on the film that makes good use of the disc but leans on dull puzzles.

This is the Sega CD version of The Lawnmower Man, which SCi developed and published. North American copies date from 1994 and European ones from November 1994. It is an interactive movie, a completely different design from the cartridge version of the same name, which has platform and shooter levels.

GamePro said the Sega CD game makes good use of the system's audio and graphics but found the puzzle-based gameplay dull. A preview in Mean Machines Sega described the Mega-CD game as a conversion of the PC CD game, with the playability tinkered with slightly.

“The variety of games is a good option, but the overall appeal of the whole theme seems tired by now.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, January 1995

“But video games are not primarily about viewing — they're about participating. Lawnmower Man CD is woefully short on interaction, to an often comic extent.”

— Mean Machines Sega, February 1995

“A belated conversion of the movie which takés you into Virtual reality via ten very varied arcade and puzzle sections. With some superb rendered graphics and sound, iťs fun to play - if a bit simplistic.”

— Sega Pro, April 1995

Electronic Gaming Monthly's average rating is the mean of its Review Crew's scores, each given on a 1 to 10 scale "in relation to other titles available for the same system."

Before you buy

The US disc is among the pricier North American Sega CD games, well above the middle. Loose, the European disc usually costs about the same as the US one, but a complete European copy usually costs noticeably more, and it needs a European Mega-CD. Loose copies sell only a few times a year, so ask for photos of the printed side, the data side and the inner ring, and check that the catalogue number and title match the case.
