About The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time, it utilizes the same engine and visual style as its predecessor. The game retains the traditional elements of Zelda games as well as those introduced in Ocarina of Time, such as active blocking with a shield, various throwing items, and the usage of melodies played on the ocarina to solve puzzles. Compared to the previous Zelda games, this installment is more oriented towards interaction with NPCs and has a larger variety of items, optional quests, and mini-games. It also includes a time system that spans three days, and this cycle must be reset periodically to progress through the game.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask on Wikipedia

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is a 2000 action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It is the second game in The Legend of Zelda series to use 3D graphics, following Ocarina of Time (1998). Designed by a creative team led by Eiji Aonuma, Yoshiaki Koizumi, and Shigeru Miyamoto, Majora's Mask was completed in less than two years. It features enhanced graphics and several gameplay changes, but reuses elements and character models from Ocarina of Time, a creative decision made necessary by time constraints.

Zelda's strangest N64 adventure, a three-day time loop built on masks, and a cart with several special editions to sort out.

Majora's Mask was developed by Nintendo EAD and released on a gold cartridge, in Japan in April 2000, North America in October 2000 and Europe in November 2000. Link arrives in a parallel world, Termina, where the moon will crash in three days, and the game is built around a repeating three-day cycle and masks that transform him.

It requires the Expansion Pak, and it sold about 3.36 million copies worldwide on the N64. GamePro's review in issue 147 called it a role-playing masterpiece and told N64 owners not to miss it, while other reviewers noted frame-rate drops and blurry textures on the aging hardware.

What the press said at the time

GamePro Issue 147December 2000Graphics 4.5 / Sound 4.5 / Control 5 / Fun Factor 4.5

“Aside from these petty blemishes, Majora is a role-playing masterpiece, effectively blending visual eye candy, great sounds, and a cool gameplay concept that uses masks. … N64 owners shouldn’t miss out on this one.”

— GamePro, December 2000

“But such problems are easily squashed flat by the steamrollering brilliance of Majora's Mask as a whole.”

— N64 Magazine, Christmas 2000

How the Nintendo 64 version differs

The Nintendo 64 cartridge requires the Expansion Pak, mainly to support the three-day cycle and mask system, and it also allows graphical enhancements and more characters on screen.

Also on other platforms

GameCube

  • GameCube. The GameCube got Majora's Mask in 2003 as part of The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition.

Before you buy

The Expansion Pak is required: the game will not start without it, so budget for one (the Japanese release also exists bundled with the Pak). The Rumble Pak is optional. The US cartridge is one of the pricier carts in the library. Both the retail and Collector's Edition carts are gold; only the Collector's Edition has the lenticular label, so a gold cart alone proves nothing. Not for Resale copies, including a gray cartridge version, sell for far more, and no published method exists to spot a fake one, so buy those graded or with a photo of the board. For any copy, a board photo is the reliable test, and a cart that boots proves nothing. PAL and Japanese copies are separate releases that sell for less.
