About The Simpsons: Bart vs. The Space Mutants

Bart vs. The Space Mutants is a platform game where the player goes into the role of Bart Simpson (from the TV show The Simpsons) and must stop the Space Mutants from invading Springfield. On each of the five levels, Bart must collect (or get rid of) the ingredients that the Space Mutants are planning to use to build their machine, such as purple objects or balloons. He also has to collect enough "proof" of the aliens existence (brown coins left behind when they are jumped on), so his family members will help him when he meets a boss (characters such as Nelson and Sideshow Bob). This won't be easy since the Space Mutants are "using" human bodies as disguise. In order to discover who are the real Space Mutants, Bart must use his X-ray Specs.

The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Master System version ($7).

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The European cart is the one to look for, and it costs less than the typical European-only cart. The look-alike risk is low. A US buyer can use it, since the US console plays European carts.

The Sega Genesis version

A shaky Genesis port of a mediocre Simpsons platformer, and an inexpensive cart.

On the Genesis, The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants is a 1992 port developed by Arc Developments and published by Acclaim's Flying Edge label, released in both North America and Europe. A Japanese Mega Drive version was advertised alongside Krusty's Fun House but never released.

Game Players' reviewer, who liked The Simpsons, called the Genesis version a big disappointment, with amateurish graphics, imprecise control and music that nearly put him to sleep.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 36September 199489%

“Although the graphics and sound don't tax the Genesis' capabilities, this cart is visually enjoyable and challenging.”

— GamePro, July 1992

“The best Simpsons game, and not a bad game in its own right.”

— Mega, July 1993

“This is without doubt one of the toughest cartoon licences out. It's even more annoying because everything about it is so perfect; the graphics, the difficulty, the sound, etc and it's BE packed with challenge.”

— Sega Pro, September 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Among US carts this sits above the middle but is not costly. The European loose cart usually costs about the same as the US one, and a complete European copy usually costs somewhat less. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
