About The Smurfs

Smurf to the rescue! Gargamel has already captured 4 Smurfs, Jocky Smurf, Greedy Smurf, Brainy Smurf and Smurfette. To free them you will have to smurf the Angry Smurfs and BUZZ flies before smurfing the mountain by sled, then smurfing the maze mine galleries, smurfing on the back of a stork to smurf Azrael and finally smurf Gargamel from his mansion! Good Smurf!

The cheapest way to own it loose is the Sega Genesis version ($15).

Also released on: Super Nintendo Entertainment System · Sega Mega Drive/Genesis · PC (Microsoft Windows) · DOS · Sega Master System/Mark III. We haven’t priced or authenticated those versions yet.

Prices are per version and are not interchangeable, and neither are the reviews: conversions in this era were often built by a different studio than the original, so a score earned on one machine says nothing about how another plays.

The Sega Master System version

A well-reviewed late platformer from Infogrames, and one of the pricier European carts.

The Smurfs was developed by Bit Managers and published by Infogrames, released in Europe on 27 January 1995 and by Tec Toy in Brazil in 1995. Mean Machines Sega called it something really worth playing for a console that had gone through a drought. It praised the large, varied levels and the changes of pace, such as a collapsing bridge and a toboggan run, and called its challenge extremely tough.

How it was made

Bit Managers developed the Master System version, and Infogrames published it in Europe with Tec Toy handling Brazil.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 43April 199554%

“An unusual theme, but nonetheless a quality product for a slowing market.”

— Mean Machines Sega, January 1995

“The squeaky-voiced blue folks leap into platform action. Despite boasting some varied sections, the main level designs are way too predictable to offer much long-term interest.”

— Sega Pro, April 1995

Before you buy

Buy the European cart or the Brazilian Tec Toy cart, both official. Loose it sits well above the middle of the European-only games, in line with a typical 1995 release, and a complete copy costs only a little more than a loose one. It is a valuable enough cart to check carefully, so ask for a photo of the board before paying. Check that the manual is there, since it is the part most often missing from a complete copy.

The Sega Genesis version

A cheerful, varied Mega Drive platformer for younger players, priced about in the middle of the European-only carts.

The Smurfs is a platformer from Infogrames that came out in Europe on 27 January 1995, so the Mega Drive cartridge is a European release. Mean Machines Sega thought it a high-quality but undemanding game, in the same company as Mickey Mania and a good buy for a younger Mega Drive owner, and praised how it keeps changing pace between platforming, a sled run and mine cart sections, with plenty of levels for the money.

Before you buy

Among European-only carts it sits about at the middle. It is a European cartridge, so look for the PAL release; a complete copy needs the case, cartridge and manual.

The Sega CD version

A pretty Mega-CD edition of a standard platformer, with a new intro and better sound but the same play underneath.

This is the Mega-CD version of The Smurfs, published by Infogrames. It came out in Europe in June 1995 and nowhere else. Sega Pro's review found it almost identical to the Mega Drive game, with a new intro scene and more impressive sound effects and music. The graphics looked great to its reviewer, with colorful levels and cute cartoon enemies.

What let it down, Sega Pro said, was the play: a bog-standard platformer with little relief from running and jumping, even with the improvements the CD brought.

What the press said at the time

“Barely updated version of an okay platformer that’s already beginning to age.”

— Sega Magazine, July 1995

Before you buy

This is a European disc, so it belongs in a European Mega-CD, and it sits above the middle of the Europe-only Mega-CD games on price. Copies sell infrequently, so a price may rest on very few sales; wait for a clear photo of the disc's printed side, its data side and the inner ring, and check that the title and catalogue number on the disc match the case.
