Nintendo 64 prices, all games & how to spot a fake

A tactical shooter rebuilt from the ground up for the N64, with a two-player co-op mode, and a very cheap cart.

This is the Nintendo 64 port of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, the tactical counterterrorism shooter that began on Windows in 1998. Saffire developed it for Red Storm Entertainment and it came out in North America in November 1999 and Europe in December. It is not a straight copy of the PC game. Saffire struggled to fit the control scheme to the N64 controller and ended up remaking the game completely so it would run without frame rate dips, and the missions were reorganized into 12, some of them borrowed from the Eagle Watch expansion.

The N64 port also has a simpler HUD than the original and a two-player split-screen cooperative mode, which most of the other console ports lack. Electronic Gaming Monthly singled out its detailed graphics and smooth frame rate, achieved without resorting to fog.

How it was made

Developed by Saffire and published by Red Storm Entertainment; the other versions of the game were each handled by different studios.

What the press said at the time

Game Informer Issue 82February 20009

“This hybrid of the PC version features some interesting enhancements that make it a worthy game.”

— Game Informer, February 2000

Before you buy

The North American cartridge is cheap, sitting below the median for the library, and the fake risk is low. A gray cartridge variant exists and sells for slightly more loose, so a gray shell is nothing to worry about. Nintendo listed the game among those enhanced by the Expansion Pak, which is optional, and the Rumble Pak is optional too. The PAL release is a separate cartridge that costs a little less loose and about the same complete. A sealed copy costs far more than a complete one.
