A well-regarded N64 port of the skating game that traded some texture and sound quality for the cartridge format.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater began on the PlayStation in 1999, and Activision handed the Nintendo 64 port to Edge of Reality, which had recently ported Monster Truck Madness 2 to the system. It came out in North America in March 2000 and in PAL regions, as Tony Hawk's Skateboarding, later that month.

Electronic Gaming Monthly's January 2000 preview said the N64's C buttons sit so close together that tricks are harder to pull off and the analog stick felt less responsive than the PlayStation's, but expected an excellent port. IGN praised the visuals as very impressive despite reduced textures and omitted full-motion video, and the audio as clear but compressed. In November 2000 it was the sixth best-selling N64 game in the United States for a week.

What the press said at the time

“What really matters is that the gameplay is still right on the money, delivering the same twitch control and responsiveness of the PlayStation game.”

— Game Informer, March 2000

“If you already own the PlayStation version, there's no reason to get this one because it's virtually identical.”

— GamePro, April 2000

“Original, intuitive and enjoyable. The N64's first skateboarding game sets a very high standard.”

— N64 Magazine, May 2000

Before you buy

Nintendo listed the game among those enhanced by the Expansion Pak, which is optional. The game saves to a Controller Pak, which is required, and the Rumble Pak is supported but optional. The cart sits below the library median loose, and PAL copies cost somewhat more loose and far more complete. Fake risk is low.
