Atari Corp's 1986 conversion of Konami's button-masher, where complete copies are the collectible.

Track & Field was Konami's 1983 arcade hit, in which most events come down to alternately pressing two buttons as fast as you can. GCC developed the 2600 conversion, with Seth Lipkin and Jacques Hugon credited, and Atari Corp released it in July 1986.

Loose cartridges are moderately priced. Complete copies sell for far more.

How it was made

Developed by GCC, with Seth Lipkin and Jacques Hugon credited, and published by Atari Corp in July 1986.

Computer Entertainer Vol. 5 No. 5August 1986Graphics ♦♦♦½ · Play-Action ♦♦♦½

“Fans of the arcade game will want this version to take home, and video sports fans in general will find it to be a winner.”

— Computer Entertainer, August 1984

“If you play with your 2600 (or have acquired a 7800), TRACK & FIELD is a good piece of sports-minded diversion”

— Computer Entertainer, August 1986

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

How the Atari 2600 version differs

The 2600 version was one of Atari's "super chip" cartridges, which allowed better graphics and more gameplay variety than earlier 2600 games.

Atari ported it to the 2600 and Atari 8-bit computers first, under its license for Konami's North American home rights; Apple II and Commodore 64 versions followed under the Atarisoft label.

  • Atari 5200. A 5200 port, which would have been identical to the Atari 8-bit version, was canceled.
  • Famicom/NES. Konami's Famicom conversion kept only four of the six events; the later US NES cartridge combined events from Track & Field and Hyper Sports, dropping the hammer throw.
  • ZX Spectrum. The ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC versions came out only on the 1988 Game, Set and Match II compilation and are poorly regarded.

Before you buy

Low risk. No fakes are documented. Atari Corp releases from 1986 onward use a universal 2600/7800 shell with no dust door and a plain gray label rather than a multi-layer silver one. That is how genuine copies look, so don't mistake it for a fake. The box and manual carry most of a complete copy's value, so check exactly what a complete listing includes and photograph-check every piece before paying for it.
