About Triple Action
Three games in one! Triple Action features three uniquely different arcade games: Racing Cars - Race side-by-side down the highway against an opponent, dodging standard traffic as you go. First one to 100 miles wins! Battle Tanks - Get in a tank and fight another player, hiding behind cover as you go. Choose between long-range or short-range bullets, or the ability for the bullets to bounce off objects for a true strategic challenge. Biplanes - Get into the cockpit of a biplane, fighting another player with either short or long range bullets. Hit the balloon for an extra point, but don't stall! First to 15 wins.

Three simple head-to-head games on one cart: tanks, cars and biplanes, and an average pick for solo players.
Triple Action is an album cartridge from Mattel's APh programmers, with Rich O'Keefe as lead programmer and Shal Farley also credited. It holds Battle Tanks, Racing Cars and Biplanes, and Tanks and Biplanes need two players.
Electronic Games called it a pot-pourri in early 1982 and remarked on how rarely Intellivision had action games. By September it put the cart in the middle: the games would not set records for design or graphics, but all were serviceable.
What the press said at the time
“The cars game is nothing major, but the air-combat program is delightful in many respects.”
“Triple Action falls somewhere between these extremes. The tank, car race and airplane games included in this cartridge will not set high-water marks for design innovation or quality graphics, but all are solid, basic games previously missing from the Intellivision library. Getting them all on a single ROM cart without paying a premium price makes this an excellent value for Intellivisionaries.”
“BEST VIDEOGAME AUDIO-VISUAL EFFECTS: Smurfs (Coleco for ColecoVision) Certificates of Merit: Phaser Patrol (Starpath, for the Atari VCS) Triple Action (Mattel, for the Intellivision)”
“Once again, Mattel's designers have taken a supposedly played-out idea, arcade/action-style head-to-head combat, and given it fresh life with an outstanding visual treatment. The biplane scenario, in particular, is an absolute joy to behold.”
Worth knowing
- From the Intellivision manual. Three games on one cartridge: Battle Tanks, Car Racing and Biplanes.
- From the Intellivision manual. Car Racing can be played alone against the clock, or side by side with a friend.
- From the Intellivision manual. In Battle Tanks options 1 and 2 you can be blown up by one of your own bouncing rounds, so be ready to get out of the way.
Before you buy
Two players are needed for two of the three games. Two Mattel keypad overlays came in the box. Sears sold a version in its own packaging, with the title upside down on the box top compared with other Sears boxes. Sealed copies run well above a loose cartridge.
