EA's first Triple Play on the N64, a baseball game that reviewers found touchy and off the mark, and one of the cheapest carts around.

Triple Play 2000 is a baseball game published by EA Sports and developed by Treyarch Invention, released only in North America in March 1999. It uses 1999 rosters with 1998 statistics, including Sammy Sosa's 66 home runs and Mark McGwire's 70, and it offers single games, a full season, the playoffs and a home run derby. Jim Hughson does the commentary, but Buck Martinez, who joined him on the other console versions, is not on the N64 version.

Electronic Gaming Monthly previewed it as EA's first Triple Play for the N64, with a bigger batting sweet spot, simpler baserunning and up to 75 camera angles. By the time the finished game was reviewed, EGM's reviewers found pitching touchy, hitting a mix of timing, aiming and luck, and the graphics flat and uninteresting, and one said he just did not have much fun with it.

“Triple Play 2000 excels in several graphics categories, including the use of dramatic camera angles, the detail of the stadium models”

— Nintendo Power, April 1999

“In its 64-bit debut, TP2000 makes a strong showing and should give the veteran All-Star Baseball and Griffey some serious trouble. Not even this editor can find much to complain about.”

— GameFan, April 1999

“the N64 version of Triple Play 2000 didn’t fare quite as well. TP2000 seems like a rushed port of the PlayStation game that could’ve used another month or two of gameplay tweaking before being released.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, May 1999

“Unfortunately, Triple Play 2000 shows its roots—its basically a tuned-up port of Triple Play '99 for the PlayStation.”

— GamePro, May 1999

Electronic Gaming Monthly's average rating is the mean of its Review Crew's scores, each given on a 1 to 10 scale "in relation to other titles available for the same system." Nintendo Power was Nintendo of America's own magazine, so its reviews are the console maker's view of its platform. Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Nintendo 64 version.

How the Nintendo 64 version differs

AllGame said the N64 version offered nothing to distinguish it from other baseball games, other than a very uneven frame rate and suspect controls.

Before you buy

The cartridge was released in North America only and is among the cheapest in the library, with a low fake risk. A complete copy is worth a couple of times the loose price, but the sums involved are small, and a sealed copy costs far more than a complete one.
