M Network's 2600 version of Mattel's Intellivision Tron game, cheap and of most interest to Tron collectors.

Tron: Deadly Discs started as a 1982 Mattel Intellivision game based on the Disney film Tron, in which you fight waves of disc-throwers and Recognizers for a high score. Mattel released an Atari 2600 version under its M Network label in 1983.

The 2600 version was developed by APh, with Jeff Ronne and Brett Stutz credited as designers. Telegames is also listed as a publisher, and the game appears under the shorter name Deadly Discs.

How it was made

Developed by APh (designers Jeff Ronne and Brett Stutz) and released by M Network in January 1983, with a PAL release in 1984.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 1 No. 10January 1983Graphics ★★★ · Play-Action ★★

“This game may appeal to dyed-in-the-wool TRON fans, but we found it just too repetitive to be of lasting interest. Not recommended.”

— Computer Entertainer, January 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

Before you buy

Low risk, with no documented reproductions. Loose carts are inexpensive. Boxed and sealed copies cost a few times more, so check box condition if you are buying complete. Check the label for the M Network or Telegames name, and for the Tron: Deadly Discs or Deadly Discs title, so you know which release you are buying. Make sure it is the 2600 cartridge, not the Intellivision one.
