Orders, not shipments: the last of the voice games drew far fewer than the first three, per the Blue Sky Rangers, Mattel's former programmers.

The last and least successful of Mattel's Intellivoice games, and one that really wants its module.

Tron: Solar Sailer was the third of Mattel's three Intellivision games based on Disney's 1982 film, and the fourth to require the Intellivoice speech module, after Space Spartans, B-17 Bomber and Bomb Squad. Mattel Electronics made and published it in 1983. A history of the voice line from the Blue Sky Rangers, who were Mattel's programmers, says orders for the first three voice games ran far higher than for Solar Sailer.

The game uses speech as an integral part of play, and collectors warn that it is very hard to play without the module.

How it was made

Mattel Electronics developed and published it in February 1983.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 1 No. 12March 1983Graphics ★★★½ · Play-Action ★★★½
Electronic Fun with Computers & Games Vol. 1 No. 9July 19832 joysticks (of 4)

“Once again, this is an involving and intellectually challenging game of the type for which Mattel is well-known.”

— Computer Entertainer, March 1983

“Solar Sailer is a beauty to behold but a beast to play. Some day I expect to see it on display at the Museum of Modern Art as a sample of video game artistry. But stripped of its cosmetic appeal and judged solely on its playability, Solar Sailer deserves a place in the Video Game Hall of Shame.”

— Electronic Fun with Computers & Games, July 1983

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — diamonds through early 1987, stars after — comparing each game only with other games for the same system. Electronic Fun rated games out of four joysticks.

Before you buy

Intellivoice is the key requirement: the cartridge boots without it, but the speech is part of the game and collectors call it very hard to play that way, so budget for the module if you want a real copy. Mattel included two keypad overlays. The box and manual carry much of a complete copy's value, and complete copies are noticeably dearer than loose carts.
