A competent, unremarkable licensed football game — interesting for who converted it and where it shipped.

A 1994 SNES/Genesis football game ported to Jaguar by Telegames — the company that published the platform's first third-party game and its last releases. It was also among the small handful of titles Japan received for this console, a marketing decision worth a raised eyebrow. Sports licensing means it aged into total obsolescence the moment the rosters did.

How it was made

Telegames developed the Atari Jaguar version. Credited: directed by Kevin Lydy; designed by Gary Luecker, John Stookey, Michael Abbot; programmed by Brian Johnson, David Schwartz, Michael Hunley; art by Andrew E. Wilson, Bert Farache, David Ellingson; music by Robert Atesalp.

Cartridge & preservation record

Cartridge ROM capacity 16 megabit (2 MB), measured from the preserved cartridge image.

Cartridge data from the No-Intro preservation database (metadata only — names, sizes and checksums, no game data).

Worth knowing

  • Telegames had its own studio, and this is one of two Jaguar games from it. The Jaguar conversion was built at Telegames' CDG division, which also produced the Jaguar Double Dragon V — two of the platform's licensed titles came out of the same small in-house team, and neither is credited to the studio that made the versions on other formats. Leland Interactive Media made the original for Tradewest, with Troy Aikman himself heavily involved, creating the plays.
  • One of the handful of titles with a Japanese release. It reached North America on 1 February 1995, Europe that May, and Japan in July through the Akihabara retailer Messe Sanoh — routinely misromanised as "Messe Sansao" in English databases. It is one of only a few Jaguar games with any Japanese release credit at all, and whether those were genuine Japanese-market products or Western stock sold over a shop counter is still unresolved. Macintosh and PC versions were advertised and never published.

Before you buy

Common in NA/EU and cheap; the Japanese-channel release is scarce. Zero counterfeit incentive.

Buying a Jaguar cartridge

Cartridges are the durable half of this library — the risk is provenance, not decay. The platform has an active post-commercial scene, so the question is usually which era a cartridge is from rather than whether it still works.

  • Ask for a photo of the label edge and the cartridge back. Reproductions are usually printed on adhesive photo stock and sit proud of the label recess.
  • Donor shells are the common trick: sanding marks on the back, or adhesive ghosting where an older label was lifted, are the strongest signals.
  • Cartridges are region-free on this platform, so a cheaper PAL copy plays on a North American console — a price difference is not evidence of a fake.
