A big, ambitious first-person shooter that pushed the N64 and is cheap to own, though its Not for Resale carts are a different story.

This is the Nintendo 64 version of Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, the second game in the Turok series and a sequel to Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. Iguana Entertainment developed it and Acclaim published it, with North America getting it in December 1998 and Europe a week later. Japan received it in June 1999 as Violence Killer: Turok New Generation. A different game with the same title came out for the Game Boy Color.

It supports the Expansion Pak for an optional high-resolution mode of 640 by 480 pixels, which Iguana added early in development after receiving 64DD development kits that included the Pak. Multiplayer supports four players by split screen, in Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Frag Tag, where one random player becomes a monkey with no attacks and little health. It was originally designed to fit a 12-megabyte cartridge.

What the press said at the time

Next Generation Issue 47November 19985 out of 5 stars

“Overall, Turok 2 is a real blast. The technical, Al, and design advances over the original make it an absolute must-have.”

— Next Generation, November 1998

“The start to a thrilling new era for the N64. Turok 2 is bigger, bolder, ballsier and, without a doubt, the best game of the year so far.”

— N64 Magazine, November 1998

“Turok 2 has to be one of the best-looking Nintendo 64 games ever, even without the Jumper Pak. With it, however, the graphics are awesome - an amazing high resolution and smooth frame rate.”

— Computer + Video Games, December 1998

“this is the N64 game of the year... after, well... you know. This is one game you simply cannot go wrong with”

— GameFan, January 1999

Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style."

Before you buy

The standard US cartridge sits below the library median, though the risk tier is medium, so ask for a photo of the board, which is the reliable test, because a cart that boots proves nothing. The game saves to a Controller Pak, not to the cartridge, so budget for one. The Expansion Pak and Rumble Pak are both optional. Variants on the row include a gray cartridge and Player's Choice copies, which sell for about the same as the original. Not for Resale carts sell for far more, and there is no published way to spot a fake one, so buy those graded or with a board photo. PAL copies cost much less than US ones.
