V-Tetris is a 1995 puzzle video game developed by Locomotive and published by Bullet-Proof Software in Japan for the Virtual Boy. Its gameplay involves the player clearing horizontal lines by moving pieces of different shapes that descend onto the playing field by filling empty spaces in order to make completed lines disappear and gain points across three modes of play. It is the first of two Tetris games released for the Virtual Boy, followed by 3D Tetris in 1996.

Not to be confused with 3-D Tetris, a different game on a different continent. V-Tetris is the Japanese Virtual Boy Tetris, published by Bullet-Proof Software — Henk Rogers' outfit, at the centre of the entire Tetris rights saga. It is mostly conventional Tetris with an optional mode that wraps the well into a cylinder. It is fine; Tetris is hard to ruin.

The collector angle is price, not play: it is the least expensive Japan-exclusive on the platform, and boxed copies carry almost no premium over loose.

How it was made

Locomotive developed it under the supervision of Bullet-Proof Software, Henk Rogers’ company and the holder of the Japanese Tetris console rights. Most of the same staff went on to Virtual Fishing and then SD Gundam: Dimension War, which makes Locomotive — Kyoto, founded 1987, headed by Hiroshi Okamoto — the most prolific third-party developer on the platform, with three of its twenty-two games.
