A technical showpiece cartridge with its own chip, and a reasonable buy.

Sega AM2's arcade game came to the Genesis in 1994 on a cartridge with an extra Sega Virtua Processor chip, which lets it draw far more polygons than the console alone. It reached North America on 14 March 1994, Japan on 18 March 1994 and Europe on 27 May 1994.

GamePro named it the best Genesis game shown at the 1994 Consumer Electronics Show, saying the play was stunningly faithful to the coin-op. The cartridge will not run on a Genesis with a 32X attached, nor on Majesco's Genesis 3.

“Virtue plays like a dream. BUT (and it is a big but) there are some big downers which lead me to believe that this game doesn't warrant a Megagame”

— Mean Machines Sega, May 1994

“Virtua Racing is undoubtedly the best driving game on the Mega Drive to date and whether you like racing games or not you will be hard pushed not to find this game irresistible.”

— MegaTech, May 1994

Before you buy

Among US carts this sits above the median. The European loose cart usually costs a little less than the US one, while a complete European copy usually costs more. The Japanese Mega Drive cart usually costs about the same and has a different cartridge shape. Sega Retro lists it as using the six-button pad. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.
