A hockey sequel that critics found barely different from the game before it.

Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey '98 is Midway's sequel to Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey, developed by Software Creations, and reached North America in December 1997 and Europe in June 1998 (PAL). Next Generation's March 1998 review said the previous game had been far from perfect but had charm, speed and a sense of fun. The magazine said Midway recycled that game, with every texture, sound effect and voice sample returning, and that the two were hard to tell apart side by side.

The gameplay was tweaked and the artificial intelligence made tougher, but the graphics and sound were largely carried over, which is where most of the criticism landed.

How it was made

Developed by Software Creations and published by Midway and GT Interactive.

What the press said at the time

Next Generation Issue 39March 19982 out of 5 stars

“However, if you're looking to buy your first N64 hockey game, you should give this a try.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, January 1998

“last year's hit is this year's deja vu — don't be sucked in by Midway's hype. If you own the original, there's nothing in the update that justifies a purchase.”

— Next Generation, March 1998

“Instead, the best thing you can say about Gretzky '98 is that at least it means you'll now be able to pick up the original for a few quid less.”

— N64 Magazine, June 1998

Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style."

How the Nintendo 64 version differs

Next Generation made simulation mode the default selection, showing Midway wanted it to be the focus of the '98 edition.
