Atari 2600 prices, all games & how to spot a fake

Epyx's late 2600 conversion of its Winter Games computer hit, cheap and a fair buy for Epyx collectors.

Winter Games was Epyx's 1985 follow-up to Summer Games, first released on the Commodore 64 and then ported widely. It presented a Winter Olympics-style event without an official license, with players each picking a country and taking turns in snow and ice events.

Epyx itself published the Atari 2600 version in October 1987, with Steve Baker credited as designer. Little else is documented about the 2600 cartridge specifically.

How it was made

Published by Epyx for the 2600 in October 1987, with Steve Baker credited as designer.

What the press said at the time

Computer Entertainer Vol. 6 No. 8November 1987Graphics ★★★½ · Play-Action ★★★½

“We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of gaming value that Epyx managed to pack into each 2600 cartridge. Both games will be good for many hours of gaming fun.”

— Computer Entertainer, November 1987

Computer Entertainer rated graphics first and play action second, from four symbols (excellent) to one (poor) — stars in most years, diamonds in 1986–87 — comparing each game only with other games for the same system.

  • NES. The NES and Famicom Disk System versions were panned for unresponsive controls, poor music and poor graphics.
  • Commodore 64. The original version. It was Epyx's best-selling Commodore game as of late 1987, and Zzap!64 scored it 94%.
  • Virtual Console. A Virtual Console version was released in Europe in February 2009.
