Sega's 3-D remake of its own arcade classic, viewed from behind the ship, and an inexpensive cart.

Zaxxon 3-D is a Sega game based on its 1982 arcade game Zaxxon, developed and published by Sega. It came out in Japan on 7 November 1987, in Europe in November 1987 and in North America in March 1988. It sends you down the space gauntlets from directly behind the ship, and Video Games and Computer Entertainment described it in 1989 as a classic theme reinvented as part of Sega's 3-D series.

It was built for the SegaScope 3-D Glasses.

“This is a fairly straight-ahead space shoot-’em-up which adapts well to the SegaScope™ 3-D glasses. That 3-D effect is what will take you awhile to adjust to as far as how you aim your missile shooting”

— Computer Entertainer, April 1988

“a really naff game which suffers from extremely boring gameplay. Give it a miss.”

— Mean Machines, May 1992

“Great in the arcades, but not here. The graphics are appalling, the sound irritating and the gameplay unrecognisable. Definitely not to be encouraged.”

— Sega Pro, April 1993

Before you buy

Three releases exist. The US cart is below the middle on price, loose. The European cart costs somewhat more loose and clearly more complete, and the Japanese cart costs much more. The Japanese cart is a different, smaller shape that does not fit a Western console without an adapter. Budget for the SegaScope 3-D Glasses, which the game was built for. The look-alike risk is low. Check that the manual is present if you want a complete copy.
