About Astro Warrior

Basic Sega shoot-em-up in which you must guide your ship through three zones while avoiding hazards. Your only weapon are bullets as your only defense, but if you shoot the flashing red pieces on the terrain, chances are that a green ship will approach you, and if you collect this ship, your weapons will be upgraded so that you shoot a laser beam instead. Keep collecting ships and you can shoot up to three laser beams at once. At the end of each zone, you will come across a boss that takes multiple hits to kill. If you manage to conquer all three zones, you are back to where you started. The whole point of this game is to earn as many points you can without losing all of your lives.

A straightforward vertical shooter that was a console pack-in in Europe, so it suits anyone who wants a quick arcade blast.

Astro Warrior is a vertically scrolling shooter developed and published by Sega. You fly a spaceship, shoot enemies and collect power-ups to reach the mother ship of an invasion force. It came out in Japan on 14 December 1986, in North America in December 1986, in Europe in October 1987, and in Brazil in 1989 through Tec Toy.

In Europe it was originally bundled with the Master System. Reviewers at the time liked the graphics, the weapons and the large number of enemies, while later looks back found it generic and short on variety.

“A very old cart, this, but it s sti not bad. Astro Warrior is a decent enough up-screen blaster”

— Mean Machines, May 1992

“A very old cart, this, but it's still not bad. Astro Warrior is a decent enough up-screen blaster and Pit Pot is a fun original game which rounds the cart out quite nicely. If you can find this for a bargain price it's worth a look.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

“Usual shoot-’em-up stuff and there’s nothing here to make you think different.”

— Sega Pro, July 1993

“Usual shoot-’em-up stuff and there’s nothing here to make you think different. Piek up the power-ups, learn the attack stratégy and Bob's your uncle.”

— Sega Pro, October 1993

Before you buy

Four releases exist: US, European, Japanese and Brazilian. The Japanese cart costs noticeably more than the US one loose but slightly less complete, and it is a different, smaller shape that does not fit a Western console without an adapter. Loose, the US cart sits below the middle of the US-released carts and the look-alike risk is low. Check the manual is there on a complete copy.
