A plain licensed racer with slowdown to match, but the cheap US cart is an easy way to add a 1997 N64 driving game.

Automobili Lamborghini is the N64 version of Titus France's Lamborghini racing game, released in North America and Europe in late 1997. GameFan's December 1997 review praised the added levels and a four-player multiplayer mode, which it said made this the best version available apart from the PC one, but its main complaint was slowdown it called disgusting. Electronic Gaming Monthly's John Ricciardi went further and named it his favorite N64 racer so far.

Japan received a separate, reworked release in 1998 as Super Speed Race 64, published by Taito. It added a new difficulty level, freely customizable controls, weather, and photographs of the Lamborghini models with their names.

How it was made

Developed and published in the West by Titus France. The Japanese release, Super Speed Race 64, was distributed by Taito.

“it could be the best controlling racer on N64 yet. Although it's true that it can get monotonous, at least it has some decent mutli-play modes.”

— GameFan, December 1997

“Lamborghini isn't all-out poor but it never makes the most of the things it has got going for it.”

— N64 Magazine, Christmas 1997

“It's got all the right elements — good Al, a decent frame rate, a generally good feel — but they never quite gel into a completely satisfying whole. … AL64 makes a decent rental, but even at Nintendo's recently lowered prices, it's no steal.”

— Next Generation, January 1998

“Overall, this is the most realistic N64 racer. Given the competition, it wasn’t a difficult feat.”

— Electronic Gaming Monthly, January 1998

Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style." Undated scores are from the review table in the game's Wikipedia article, limited to reviews of the Nintendo 64 version.

Before you buy

Low fake risk and a cheap cart: the US copy sits near the bottom of the library on loose price, and PAL copies cost less again. The Japanese Super Speed Race 64 is the reverse and costs well over twice as much loose, so buy it only if you specifically want the updated Japanese version. Complete copies command a clear premium over loose cartridges.
