Baldies is a 1995 real-time strategy video game developed by Creative Edge Software and originally published by Atari Corporation for the Atari Jaguar CD. It was later ported to the PC, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and Macintosh. In the game, the player manages a community of Baldies in order to build structures, increase their population, and create weapons to fight against enemies known as Hairies. There are four classes of Baldies and each structure has specific properties to assist the player. Its gameplay combines strategy with simulation and god game elements. Up to four players can participate in a multiplayer mode via local area network (LAN) on PC.

A god-game-adjacent RTS on the Jaguar CD — and a cartridge according to several large lists that are wrong.

Direct populations of bald creatures to build, breed, and war against the Hairies — in the Bullfrog tradition without quite reaching it. The cataloguing point matters more than the review: Baldies is a Jaguar CD title, never released on cartridge, and multiple large databases list it wrong. Between this, Syndicate, Theme Park, and Towers II, the Jaguar has more strategy content than its failed-3D-showcase reputation suggests.

How the Atari Jaguar version differs

The Jaguar CD is where Baldies was actually finished. Creative Edge's Amiga original went out as a CU Amiga covermount demo in May 1995 and was never published; the game was completed on Jaguar CD first, with the team converting and rewriting roughly 90% of the Amiga assembly code for the Jaguar's architecture.

Ships with a controller overlay and supports the ProController. It saves after each completed level if a Memory Track cartridge is present, and falls back to passwords if not.

3DO and Amiga CD32 ports were in development alongside the Amiga version and neither was released.

Buying a Jaguar CD title

Jaguar CDs are the most fragile discs of their generation, and the reason is structural rather than bad luck: Atari built a proprietary format on the audio-CD spec instead of standard CD-ROM. Capacity rose to roughly 790MB, but error correction fell.

Light scratches that a PlayStation disc shrugs off can make a Jaguar CD unreadable. Treat "light scratches, plays fine" with more scepticism here than on any other platform.
Only buy discs that have been test-played on real hardware — emulator testing proves nothing about a marginal disc.
Confirm the Memory Track cartridge is included or already owned: most Jaguar CD titles cannot save without it, and it is routinely missing from used listings.
Check the jewel case hinges and tray teeth. Replacement cases are common and are not a fault, but a swapped case often travels with swapped inserts.
