A competent but plain kick boxing game, notable mainly for supporting Sega's Activator, and cheap to own.

This is the Genesis version of Best of the Best: Championship Karate, made by Loriciel and published by Electro Brain in North America. In Japan it came out as The Kick Boxing. You fight your way through a series of kick boxing masters to win the championship. It is an updated version of Panza Kick Boxing, which appeared in 1990 on European computers and on the TurboGrafx-16.

Video Games & Computer Entertainment's reviewer enjoyed the variety of attacks and solid play in December 1992, though the magazine's editors were disappointed, especially next to the TurboGrafx-16 original.

How the Sega Genesis version differs

The Genesis version is one of the few games to support the Sega Activator motion controller.

Also on other platforms

Amiga · Amstrad CPC · MS-DOS · NES · Super NES · Game Boy

  • Amiga. The Australian Commodore & Amiga Review called it almost a reproduction of Panza Kick Boxing, the same crowd, referee and moves with only an added advanced stage at the end.

Before you buy

Among US carts it is on the cheap side, below the middle. The Japanese cart (The Kick Boxing) usually costs much more than the US one, both loose and complete, and its cartridge has a different shape from a Western one. Sega Retro lists the game as working with the Sega Activator, which matters only if you own one.
