About Brain Dead 13

In Braindead 13, the player takes on the role of a young computer expert who one day is called to fix a computer at some scary castle and in no time flat, finds himself in trouble. It is up to the player to use the complex moves of an interactive movie to escape from the castle. This animated adventure is basically based on the player's judgment on which direction you think the character might go, and if the player guesses wrong, death.

Brain Dead 13 is an interactive movie video game developed and originally published in North America by ReadySoft on 15 December 1995 and in Europe by Empire Interactive in the same year for MS-DOS. Unlike Dragon's Lair and Space Ace, which began as laserdisc arcade games, it was only released for personal computers and video game consoles. In the game, players assume the role of young computer expert Lance Galahad to defeat Dr. Nero Neurosis at his castle and its residents. Its gameplay is primarily presented through the use of full-motion video (FMV).

ReadySoft's third and best interactive movie — the one that knows what it is.

The only one of the three ReadySoft discs they originated rather than converting from a Bluth laserdisc: Lance the computer technician answers a service call at a castle and spends the game pursued by Fritz, a hunchbacked assistant with an axe. The animation is genuinely funny, the death scenes are elaborate, and the humor holds up better than Dragon's Lair's earnestness. Still a quick-time game — but self-aware about it.

Worth knowing

A Sega CD version was started and abandoned. A Sega CD conversion was in development and never released — a common fate for full-motion-video titles once the format collapsed commercially.
The Jaguar version is a one-disc squeeze, and it shows. The PC, Saturn and Jaguar CD releases all compressed the game onto a single CD-ROM. The 3DO and PlayStation versions used two discs. The result is that this version's video quality is considerably lower than those — on a game that is nothing but video. If you are comparing versions of a full-motion-video title, disc count is the specification that matters, and the Jaguar drew the short one.
Its Japanese publisher also published a Virtual Boy grail. The Japanese PlayStation and Saturn editions were published by Coconuts Japan Entertainment — the same company behind Space Squash on the Virtual Boy. Coconuts Japan no longer exists, which is precisely why Space Squash's rights are orphaned and it has never been re-released.

Before you buy

The priciest of the interactive-movie discs by a wide margin — a late-1996 release with a small run. At these values, hardware-tested condition is non-negotiable.

Buying a Jaguar CD title

Jaguar CDs are the most fragile discs of their generation, and the reason is structural rather than bad luck: Atari built a proprietary format on the audio-CD spec instead of standard CD-ROM. Capacity rose to roughly 790MB, but error correction fell.

Light scratches that a PlayStation disc shrugs off can make a Jaguar CD unreadable. Treat "light scratches, plays fine" with more scepticism here than on any other platform.
Only buy discs that have been test-played on real hardware — emulator testing proves nothing about a marginal disc.
Confirm the Memory Track cartridge is included or already owned: most Jaguar CD titles cannot save without it, and it is routinely missing from used listings.
Check the jewel case hinges and tray teeth. Replacement cases are common and are not a fault, but a swapped case often travels with swapped inserts.
