About Psycho Fox

Psycho Fox must get to the right hand side of the level. However, there are many enemies in the way. He can use a Shinto stick to change into characters/animals like a hippopotamus, a monkey or a tiger, each of which has its own special ability. The hippopotamus is slow and cannot jump very high, but can punch through special destructible blocks in the game world. The monkey can jump higher than the other creatures and the tiger can run faster. Psycho also has an ally named Birdfly, who can be used as armor or as a boomerang. If Psycho is hit while carrying Birdfly, Birdfly goes away and the player does not lose a life.

A lively platformer that British magazines ranked among the best on the system, and one of the better-regarded European carts.

Psycho Fox is a platform game developed by Vic Tokai and published by Sega, released in Europe in December 1989 and in North America in May 1990. Tec Toy later put it out in Brazil in 1992 as Sapo Xulé: Os Invasores do Brejo, with the hero replaced by the cartoon frog Sapo Xulé. That is an official Tec Toy release.

Mean Machines, looking back in 1992, said its extra rounds and hidden bonuses made it probably the greatest all-out arcade platform game on the Master System. S: The Sega Magazine described it in 1990 as one of the best games for the Master System.

How it was made

Developed by Vic Tokai. Shoji Suzuki is credited as programmer, and Fumito Tamayama and Hiroto Kanno as composers.

Before you buy

The European cart is much cheaper than the US one, loose and complete, so it is the economical choice unless you specifically want the American box. The US cart sits well above the middle of the US carts when loose. The Brazilian Tec Toy edition is a separate release with the Sapo Xulé theme. The look-alike risk is low. Check the manual is present, since it is the part most often missing from a complete copy.
