The Sega Master System version

A prehistoric platformer that Mean Machines rated among the best on the Master System, and cheap for what it is.

Chuck Rock was developed by Core Design and published by Virgin Games in Europe, where it came out in August 1992; Tec Toy released it in Brazil in 1992. The music and sound effects for the Master System, Mega Drive and Game Gear versions were composed by Matt Furniss at Krisalis Software.

Mean Machines called it one of the best platform games on the Master System, praising its enjoyable gameplay and its graphics and sound, and another of its reviewers wrote that it was the most fun he had had with the console for ages, though the game is hard once past the first couple of levels.

The Sega Genesis version

A funny, good-looking caveman platformer that Mean Machines Sega loved, and a cheap cart in every region.

This is the Genesis version of Chuck Rock, published by Virgin Games with Core Design credited as developer. It came out in North America in January 1992 and in Europe in August 1992. Matt Furniss at Krisalis Software wrote the music and sound effects for the Genesis, Game Gear and Master System versions.

Mean Machines Sega called it a brilliant, humorous Mega Drive platformer with real character, with out-of-this-world graphics, brilliant sound and pretty good gameplay, and scored it 91%.

Among US carts this sits a little below the middle, so there is no reason to overpay. A loose European cart usually costs about the same as a US one, while a complete European copy usually costs noticeably less. A complete US copy means the case, cartridge and manual.

The Sega CD version

Chuck Rock's caveman platforming with extra levels, a password system and a remixed soundtrack, though it never strictly needed a CD.

This is the Sega CD version of Core Design's Chuck Rock. It came out in North America in 1992 and in Europe in July 1993. Video Games magazine (April 1994) described it as essentially the cartridge game with improved graphics and great CD sound, and liked the amusing opening cartoon, which plays without any load lag.

Mega magazine found it bigger than the cartridge, with new baddies, extra levels that made it noticeably tougher, a password system, and a soundtrack that spiced up the cartridge's tunes. It still marked the game down because nothing here, it argued, couldn't have been done on a standard Mega Drive cartridge.

How it was made

Core Design developed it. The music and sound effects in the Mega-CD version were composed by Martin Iveson.

What the press said at the time

Sega Pro Issue 23September 199372%

“Gameplay-wise, Chuck Rock retains its charm. The levels are large and filled with mildly perplexing puzzles and the overall impression that the game gives is one of fun.”

— Mega, April 1993

“Bigger and (therefore) better than the cart version, but Core Design (the game’s programmers) know what the Mega CD is really capable of (wait until you see Thunderhawk ) and this ain’t it.”

— Mega, July 1993

“Not much different from the Mega Drtve version. Similar graphics, but nicer Intro sequence and better sound.”

— Sega Pro, September 1993

Before you buy

Among North American Sega CD games the US disc sits below the middle on price, and the European disc usually costs much more loose and about the same complete. Each suits the matching region's console: a European disc needs a European Mega-CD. A quick look that the disc's title and the case match is enough here.
