A scaled-down arcade port that critics disliked at the time, and a cheap cart for completists.
This is the Nintendo 64 version of Cruis'n USA, the 1994 Midway arcade racer. It was developed by Leland Interactive Media, the San Diego division of Williams Entertainment, published by Nintendo, and released in North America in December 1996. Most of the arcade graphics were downgraded to fit the home console, and some content, such as running over animals, was cut. It was announced as a launch title, but Nintendo pulled it from the lineup a few weeks before launch day because it did not meet the company's quality standards.
Period critics were unkind. Computer and Video Games called it a mistake for the N64 in early 1997, saving a little praise for how closely it resembled the arcade machine, and Next Generation later counted it among the console's early racing disappointments.
What the press said at the time
| Next Generation Issue 26 | February 1997 | 1 out of 5 stars |
| Next Generation Issue 25 | January 1997 | 1 out of 5 stars |
“Overall, this half-hearted, rough-shod conversion is exactly what Nintendo 64 doesn’t need — and adds weight to the growing gripe among third parties that the system is a bitch to work with.”
“While entertaining at first, Cruis'n's thrills eventually fade because the game doesn't offer enough diversity or challenge to maintain interest.”
“casual racing fans and young gamers alike will enjoy Cruis’n’s rowdy yet shallow action.”
“With the N64 now housing TGR and MRC, Cruis‘n USA's no longer even a novelty. A Grade Z stinker.”
Next Generation rated games from one star ("Bad: crucially flawed in design or application") to five ("Revolutionary"); three stars meant "Good: a solid and competitive example of an established game style."
Before you buy
The North American cartridge is cheap, below the median for the library, and the fake risk is low. A Player's Choice reissue sells for about the same loose as the original. PAL copies are a separate release that cost about the same loose and somewhat less complete. Sealed copies cost far more than anything else, so skip them unless you are collecting sealed games.
