A run-and-gun from the Neo Geo's first wave, with huge sprites and bold sound that its reviewers loved more than its design.
Cyber-Lip is a run-and-gun from SNK, and a March 1992 magazine described a computer gone berserk. It was in the launch window: the MVS arcade release was November 1990, and the home AES cart went on general sale in Japan in July 1991. Video Games & Computer Entertainment called the graphics and sound awesome in March 1992, and its 1990 gamer-poll coverage picked Cyber-Lip as an example of the gigantic enemies the Neo Geo's sprite power allowed.
Critical reception was mixed, though, from arcade debut onward through the AES release. Treat it as a showpiece of early Neo Geo spectacle rather than a deep game. A Neo Geo CD version followed in 1995, and Hamster's ACA NeoGeo version gives modern players the arcade game.
How it was made
Developed and published by SNK. Wikipedia credits Higashi Pon as designer, Sho Chan as programmer and Yasuo Yamate as composer.
What the press said at the time
“Cyber Lip should be played by everyone with a Neo Geo at least once (Without a memory card!). If more games like this one come out on the Neo Geo, I'll buy them all!”
“The computer is big, bad and berserk in the oddly named Cyber-Lip (SNK for the NeoeGeo). The graphics and sound are awesome in this free-for-all fight.”

Before you buy
One of the early-era carts, and priced high for a game of this reputation, especially complete. The US cart from SNK of America sells for somewhat less loose than the Japanese one. Launch-era carts were expensive when new, and copies today are sold with a hard case, artwork and manual. Because an arcade board in an AES shell is the documented fraud, ask for photos of the board on a complete copy: genuine AES boards read NEO-AEG.
