What it needs to play

  • Some modesSave battery (inside the cartridge) — saves to memory kept alive by a battery inside the cartridge; if that battery has died, saves are lost (MAME cartridge records).

How often it sells

  • Loose: rarely — fewer than one recorded sale a year
  • Complete: about once a year
  • Sealed: rarely — fewer than one recorded sale a year

Prices marked “few sales” rest on about one recorded sale a year, so treat them as a rough guide: the next copy could sell well above or below. Expect to wait for one to come up.

A Japanese role-playing game port for role-playing fans who want a battery-backed Mega Drive cart.

Dragon Slayer: Eiyū Densetsu is the Mega Drive version of Nihon Falcom's role-playing game, released in Japan by Sega on 16 September 1994. It began on the NEC PC-8801 in 1989 as the sixth Dragon Slayer game and the first of The Legend of Heroes line.

It was a Japan-only cartridge on the Mega Drive, with Sega Falcom credited as developer.

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Famitsu rated the Mega Drive version 23 out of 40 in 1994, well below the 29 out of 40 it gave the Super Famicom version.

Also on other platforms

PC-98 · FM Towns · MSX2 · TurboGrafx-CD · Super NES · X68000 · Windows · PlayStation · Sega Saturn · TurboGrafx-16

  • TurboGrafx-16. The PC Engine version reached the United States as a TurboGrafx-CD release and was the only game in the series released in the US until the PlayStation Portable remake.
  • Super NES. Famitsu scored the Super Famicom version 29 out of 40 in 1992.

Before you buy

The Japanese cartridge has a different shape from a Western one and needs an adapter, or two plastic tabs removed from a Western console's slot. The game saves to a battery inside the cartridge, so check that a save holds; a replaced battery is a normal repair and not a sign of a fake. Because it is a Medium risk cart, ask for a photo of the board.
