The Sega Genesis version

The Genesis original that started EA's FIFA series, now a cheap cart in every region except Japan.

FIFA International Soccer, also known as FIFA 94, was developed by EA Canada's Extended Play Productions team and published by EA Sports. The Genesis cartridge came out in Europe on 3 December 1993, in North America the same month, and in Japan on 10 June 1994, published there by Electronic Arts Victor. It was the first game in the FIFA series and began development as EA Soccer.

It was a hit in Europe: the Mega Drive version was the best-selling home video game of 1993 in the United Kingdom and sold more than 500,000 copies. Edge praised the way the crowd sounds reacted to play on the pitch and the visual detail of the players and animation in its isometric view. Game Players, writing about the later Super NES port, called the Genesis game the one that set the standard for soccer.

How it was made

The game began on the Genesis under the working title EA Soccer. It was ported to numerous other systems in 1994, and the Sega CD, 3DO and Super NES versions are different products.

“There's no doubt whatsoever that this is the King of footy games. In terms of appearance, nothing comes close, and its many features also raise it above the rest.”

— MegaTech, December 1993

“If you love fast-paced soccer action with superb graphic details and real-life sounds, then FIFA International Soccer is for you.”

— GamePro, December 1993

“It's as revolutionary a perspective as John Madden's Football was when it first came out and immediately makes all other Megadrive football games look dated.”

— Sega Magazine, January 1994

“From the first moment you switch on EA’s FIFA /nter-national Soccer you realize this cart is something special. The programming talents at Extended Play Productions have pulled out all the stops to create the greatest soccer game ever!”

— VideoGames, January 1994

How the Sega Genesis version differs

Development began on the Mega Drive/Genesis under the working title EA Soccer, on a small budget.

GameFan said in May 1994 that the Super NES version was more enjoyable to play than its Genesis counterpart.

  • Super NES. Game Players said the Super NES version was not an exact transfer: graphics, sound effects and music are weaker, but control is helped by a power meter and the L and R buttons.
  • 3DO. The 3DO version added multiple camera views and more detailed graphics than other versions.

This is a cheap US cart, below the middle of the group. The European loose cart usually costs about the same as the US one, and a complete European copy usually costs less. The Japanese cart usually costs much more than either and has a different cartridge shape, so only pay that for a reason. Check the listing says Genesis or Mega Drive, since the series appeared on many other systems.

The Sega CD version

The soccer game you already know, given crowd noise and a few video clips for the Sega CD.

This is the Sega CD version of FIFA International Soccer, developed by Extended Play Productions and published by EA Sports. It came out in Europe in June 1994 and in North America in 1994. Apart from some added video clips it plays like the cartridge versions.

The difference that mattered most to Diehard GameFan in August 1994 was the sound. It said the crowd sounds, chants and sing-alongs lift the game to a new multimedia level and are essential to the World Cup experience, even if sound alone may not seem reason enough to upgrade from the cartridge.

What the press said at the time

“was an experience | will not soon forget. FIFA CD does an exceptional job of catching the spirit and flavor of this experi-”

— Diehard GameFan, September 1994

“a great soccer game, with plenty of action and detailed atmosphere. Say, if you can’t use your hands in soccer, do you push the controller buttons with your feet?”

— Game Players, December 1994

This is an inexpensive Sega CD game; its US disc sits below the middle among North American releases, and the European disc usually costs a little more. A European disc needs a European Mega-CD. A quick look that the printed disc matches the case is plenty here.
