About Flashback: The Quest for Identity
Throughout the 20th century, an unprecedented political and economic crisis afflicted Earth, leading to the systematic disabling of it's programme to conquer outer space through lack of funding. The highest priority now was to carryout research into new energy sources, preservation of the enviro- ment and maintenance of the cultural heritage. However, at the dawn of the 21st century, provision of considerable funds from an unknown source released by the politicians of the new, unified government, permitted a return to the space research programme. The conquest began gradually with the construction of huge, manned artificial satellites. Several lunar bases were created with the view to becoming future Earth colonies within the solar system. The considerable advancements made together with the supply of increasingly greater sums of money allowed man to explore, even as far as the planet Titan. You play the part of Conrad Hart, controlling his every move through the 6 levels of the game. During your quest, you will come across many different friends and foes whom you may wish to help or vanquish using your gun. you will have to complete many challenges in order to restore your lost memory. Each level features its own unique graphics and hazards, linked by cinematic animation sequences.

Flashback, released as Flashback: The Quest for Identity in the United States, is a 1992 cinematic platformer developed by Delphine Software and published by U.S. Gold for the Amiga. It was directed, written, designed, and partially programmed by Paul Cuisset, who had previously created the adventure game Future Wars with Éric Chahi. Flashback was ported to the Mega Drive/Genesis, MS-DOS, Acorn Archimedes, and Super NES in 1993. CD-ROM versions for the Sega CD, 3DO, CD-i, MS-DOS, Macintosh, and FM Towns were released in 1994 and 1995, followed by a cartridge version for the Atari Jaguar in 1995. In 2017, the game was released worldwide on the Dreamcast, featuring graphic assets and cutscenes from the MS-DOS version and music from the Amiga version. An updated port titled Flashback: Remastered Edition was released for Nintendo Switch on 7 June 2018, for PlayStation 4 on 20 November 2018, and for Windows on 29 November 2018. The game was also released in October 2023 for the Evercade platforms as part of Delphine collection cartridge, and is based on the original Mega Drive/Genesis version.

Delphine's rotoscoped classic on its fourth or fifth platform — and the animation still looks good.
Conrad the amnesiac agent, ledge-grabs, careful jumps, and gunfights that reward positioning over reflexes — a deliberate, cinematic world from the studio that made Another World. A solid conversion of a genuinely great game, and it pairs naturally with the Jaguar's 2013 Another World cartridge: same studio lineage, same console, eighteen years apart.

Worth knowing
- EGM called the Jaguar cutscenes the best anywhere. Reviewing the conversion, Electronic Gaming Monthly singled out one thing: "Flashback wowed everyone when it broke graphic barriers on the Genesis, and now this excellent cart is for the Jaguar. The terrific cinema displays in this version are the smoothest that you'll find anywhere… The cinemas are as smooth as silk, and they are fast too." Their verdict on the rest was flatter — essentially the same game — so the case for this version over the others rests on the animation.
- It was on so many machines it became a running joke. Electronic Games opened its March 1995 Genesis review by asking whether anyone anywhere had somehow avoided playing Flashback yet, adding that the dwindling few were still waiting on the CD-i and Jaguar editions, "likely to be followed by a version for touch-tone phones". Its arrival was also part of the moment the Jaguar's software drought broke — EGM wrote that month that after a period with "literally no Jaguar games to be found", it was suddenly "drowning in them", naming Flashback and Wolfenstein 3D as the big ones.

Cartridges are the durable half of this library — the risk is provenance, not decay. The platform has an active post-commercial scene, so the question is usually which era a cartridge is from rather than whether it still works.
- Ask for a photo of the label edge and the cartridge back. Reproductions are usually printed on adhesive photo stock and sit proud of the label recess.
- Donor shells are the common trick: sanding marks on the back, or adhesive ghosting where an older label was lifted, are the strongest signals.
- Cartridges are region-free on this platform, so a cheaper PAL copy plays on a North American console — a price difference is not evidence of a fake.
