A side-scrolling Goemon adventure that critics ranked among the N64's best side-scrollers, and one of the priciest carts in its group.

Mystical Ninja 2 Starring Goemon, also released as Goemon's Great Adventure, was developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Osaka and published by Konami. It reached Japan in December 1998, Europe in June 1999 and North America in September 1999. It is the fourth game in the Ganbare Goemon series released in North America and Europe, and it returns the series to side-scrolling play in 2.5D.

Reviewers rated it among the best side-scrollers on the system. Nintendo Power felt it was a side-scroller done right for the N64, and IGN thought two-player co-op, 2D play with 3D graphics and excellent music made it a much better game than the first N64 Mystical Ninja. GamePro was less taken, calling it a bit of a let down.

What the press said at the time

“it's Goemon's repetitiveness and lack of 'spark' that's been the cause of our biggest sighs. You'd best save your prayers for Goemon 3.”

— N64 Magazine, March 1999

“radiates personality and the level and character design are excellent … Finally, a sidescroller done right on the N64.”

— Nintendo Power, April 1999

“Back in its familiar 2D surroundings (minus the horrific PS rev) it shines as the best platformer released since the magical SkullMonkeys on PS. Clean, colorful (albeit fuzzy) graphics and rock solid bring-tears-to-your-eyes gameplay make this a must-have N64 experience.”

— GameFan, April 1999

Nintendo Power was Nintendo of America's own magazine, so its reviews are the console maker's view of its platform.

Before you buy

The US cartridge costs far more than the library median, so the fake risk is medium: ask for a photo of the board, which is the reliable test, because a cart that boots proves nothing. The game saves to a Controller Pak, not to the cartridge, so budget for one; the Rumble Pak is optional. PAL copies cost less loose and about the same complete. Japanese copies cost a small fraction of the US price and are a separate release. Sealed copies sell for far more than complete ones.
