A solid but familiar sequel brawler that period critics found too close to the first game.

Golden Axe II is a side-scrolling beat 'em up developed and published by Sega, a sequel to the 1989 Golden Axe. It came out in Japan on 27 December 1991, in North America in January 1992 and in Europe in 1992. You play one of three warriors out to recover the Golden Axe, and the game lets you choose how much magic to use and adds an attack that hits all around you.

Mean Machines Sega was lukewarm. It found the game very close to the original, lacking atmosphere and new features, with mixed graphics and disappointing sound, and advised buying the original if you had not yet.

“Any complaints are in the “too bad" department and don't overly detract from an otherwise solid slice-n-dicer.”

— GamePro, January 1992

“It follows the same formuta, has virtually no new features and certainly isn't worth the money.”

— Mean Machines, May 1992

“Although Golden Axe is fantastic, Sega couldn’t improve on it with its sequel, in fact they produced a game which wasn’t a patch on the fast. Golden Axe 2 lacks playability, and a long term challenge.”

— MegaTech, September 1992

“Buv the oriainnl if vmi haven't nlrendv ant GYNOUG Known in the US as Wings of Wor, this is one of the finest horizontally scrolling blasters available on the Megadrive. The gory, ghoulish graphics are out standing, the sound is excellent and the tough and challenging gameplay is extremely addictive. A must for blasting fans.”

— Mean Machines Sega, December 1992

Before you buy

Among US carts it is one of the pricier ones, above the middle, and its risk tier is Medium. The European loose cart usually costs about the same as the US one, and a complete European copy usually costs more. The Japanese loose cart usually costs more. A Sega Gold Collection European reissue is priced separately and sells for far more than the standard European cart. Sega Retro lists it as a three-button-only game.
